Screams and howls of insane laughter echoed through the sterile metal walls of Echidna Island's research facilities. Fires cast orange glows everywhere as smoke filled the air, forcing the human residents to leave or die. Desks were smashed, rooms were ransacked, and hundreds were killed (and worse) in the ensuing chaos.
It had only taken a few minutes for the anarchy to take its toll as hundreds of men mounted the advanced weaponry in what had beeen dubbed Cerberus zone, destroying the hundred foot tall, fifty foot thick walls that kept one third of the island safe from its perilous dangers. Some tried to stop the crazed men and women, only to fall at their hands.
Those who were not killed in the conflict escaped by the only means available: they crossed the wall. Scientists and soldiers alike took all they could find and scrambled into the wilderness, praying that fate would be merciful. As if to show the extent of life's ruthlessness, a Minhaoco tunneld through the concrete of Cerberus Zone, slaying many of the people within while the refugees forged into the fields.
Groups were split by hungry beasts. Large, blue furred felines cut down parties. Some sought refuge in Mount Echdina, only to fall prey to the murderous yetis. Hundreds died.
And, on that very night, a large cruise ship was blown off course by a tropical storm. Its side was scraped by the sharp, jagged rocks of the island. Too add to this misfortune a plethora of sea monsters attacked the vessel, from the serpent Jormangand and leviathan to the swarm of Megaladon sharks coasting through the waters. Those who were not thrown overboard clung to dear life as the mutilated liner crashed through Kraken Cove, spilling its contents onto the beach. Horror's from a child's nightmares devoured many survivors while other drowned, caught in the wreckage.
The night turned to day. Cerberus Zone was a barren wasteland, filled with broken and useless machinery and blood smeared corpses, many half eaten by scavengers. The wreck of the ship had been thoroughly ransacked as well, with the few survivors scouting the wilderness in a desperate attempt to protect themselves. Several scattered survivors wandered aimlessly in an island of monsters.
This is where out story begins.
